Sawyer saw the episode with the Idaho State Penitentiary on Ghost Adventurers a couple years ago, and has wanted to tour it ever since. We went through Boise on our way home from vacation last year, but it was late at night, so we only got an eerie glimpse of the outside. This year, we decided to tour it on our way to the Oregon Coast. We watched the episode the night before just so we would know a little bit about the background. This place has a lot of creepy history behind it.
The prison was constructed in 1870, and housed 13,000 prisoners until it closed in 1973.
This area is known as the Rose Garden. This is where the original gallows were located, and 9 of the 10 hangings took place here. The presence of ghosts have been felt here, but we didn't feel a thing...darn it!
This is the entrance to the solitary confinement cells. This area was a little bit creepy. They call it Siberia. You can go into the cells and still see where the prisoners scratched things on the walls. Some scratched how many days they had been in there. They could come out once a week to shower.

These are just the basic prison cells. They put 4 people in each one of the tiny cells.
This was the maximum security section, and death row.

This place was a little creepy. This is where Raymond Snowden (Idaho's Jack the Ripper) was executed. The trap door right behind Sawyer is where he fell through when he was hung. This is where the doctors stood waiting to pronounce his death. Something went wrong, and he hung there for 15 minutes before he died. His ghost is said to be active at the prison as well. I'm glade we didn't meet up with him!
It is an interesting place, with a lot of history. I wish we could have met some ghosts while we were there :)!
