Devil's Staircase/Hurricane Pass/Alaska Basin

Thursday:
Mark and I had another awesome camping weekend in Teton Canyon. We have really been taking advantage of his every other Friday off schedule. We drove up Thursday afternoon, and on our way to the canyon we saw a sign for Packsaddle Lake. I had heard of it, but never been there, so after we got our campsite set up, we drove out to the lake. We pretty much had the lake to ourselves! We watched a bull moose in the water, and a bald eagle in a tree for about an hour while we explored around the lake. Then we went hiking for an hour, and came back and they were both still there. So fun!

Packsaddle Lake

Our friend Bullwinkle!

The eagle swooped over the lake right when we got there, and then sat in the tree for the next couple hours while we were there.

If you look really closely across the lake in this picture, you can see our cute moose friend.

Here are a couple videos of the moose:

Friday:
We did two hikes on Friday, both from trailheads along the Teton Pass. Our first one was to Coal Creek Meadows and the Mesquite Divide. We loved this one! The whole thing was beautiful, and from this hike, we already found more we want to try in the fall or next season!

Our hike followed Coal Creek to a beautiful meadow. It switched off from forest to aspen groves.

This picture is looking back down the canyon we had just come up.

Going through the Coal Creek Meadow.

The meadow behind Mark. We were on our last climb to the Mesquite Divide.

We met some people who camped in some trees along the meadow, and the night before they saw a bear running through the meadow.

This was our view from the Mesquite Divide! So gorgeous! You can see the Tetons off in the distance.

See the trail going down the canyon? We are going to do this hike again, but continue on and go down that trail. We will end at a totally different place. I can't wait!
Our second hike of the day was up Mt. Glory. It was brutal! It was only 2 miles; a mile up to the top, and a mile back down. We climbed 1655 feet in that mile. It took us 58 minutes to get up it. We'd stop and rest every .05 miles! The views from the top were great though!

The Mt. Glory trail is at the top of the Teton Pass.

This is only about a quarter mile up the trail. You can tell how steep it is by looking at the angle of the trees in this picture.

This is about a third of the way up. If you look closely in the picture, you can see the turn out where the cars are parked at the top of the pass.

We made it!

It was super windy at the top.

It was a really great cloud day!

Mark took a panoramic video from the top:

The rest of the day we just relaxed at our campsite. We read, played games, and ate yummy food.

Saturday:
Saturday was the best! We did a 22.5 mile training run/hike. We went up Devil's Staircase, along the shelf, came down, crossed the Alaska Basin, climbed up the opposite side of the basin to Hurricane Pass, and then finished down the Alaska Basin trail back to the trailhead. Every part of the trail is gorgeous! It's one of my all time favorites!

About 2 miles into the run we saw a cute moose!

Our view of the canyon we had just come up from part way up the Devil's Staircase climb.

This is a great view, but moose number two is also hidden in the picture.

There she is, laying down in front of the trees.

This is the trail that leads us from the shelf, down into the Alaska Basin.

Our first view of Sunset Lake.

The lake was so pretty!

This is my new favorite picture!

We thought we were too late in the season for the wildflowers, but they were still great on our way up to Hurricane Pass.

Lots of flowers!

Oh wait, maybe this is my new favorite picture!

Battleship Mountain

We made it! There is no better view of the Tetons than from here!

This shows the trail leading to Cascade Canyon. We'll be running in that canyon next week.

Or is this my new favorite? I can't decide!
You can see why this is one of my favorite places to run and hike! I love this area! I think we have more fun training for our races than anything else!
After that, we cleaned up at our camp, ate lunch, and rested for awhile before we packed up and headed home. Super fun weekend!
