Wassmuth Center Upstander Award

Bystander- A person who is present at an event or incident but does not take part.
Upstander- Someone who recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right.

We made a quick trip over to Boise for Bailey to receive an award. The Wassmuth Center for Human Rights awarded six Idaho teens the Upstander award. Bailey received hers for the work she does to fight against sex trafficking. We spent most of the day walking around the BSU campus and getting some of our college questions answered. We found the dorm she'll be living in, toured the Institute building, fitness facility, and just got familiar with campus.  That evening we went to the Morrison Center on campus for a dramatic reading called, 'Letters from Anne and Martin.' It was Anne Frank's diary meshed together with a letter Martin Luther King Jr. wrote while in the Birmingham Jail. It was pretty cool. After that they brought the 6 teens up on stage and told a little bit about what they do to be an upstander. They each got a nice plaque and some scholarship money. Bailey received $250. The kids got a standing ovation from the audience, so that was really cool! We are super proud of Bailey and her drive and determination to make the world a better place. She loves the quote, "We only have two choices: do nothing, or do something." She always tries to do something! I can't think of a single person more deserving of an award like this. Congratulations Bailey!

Can you tell she's super excited about college?

Jumping for joy about being a Bronco in the fall!

Congratulations on a well deserved award!

I think she was the only non-Boise teen to receive the award.

Holy Hail!

We had the craziest storm I've ever seen in Idaho! We were in Shelley at a track meet when we got tornado warnings on our phones. We noticed how crazy the sky was looking around us. Bailey had the last two events of the meet, but when it was over, we started driving home. We were about 10 minutes from Idaho Falls when an emergency warning came on the radio to get inside immediately because there was going to be very large hail, and strong winds. There was lightening everywhere around us and the sky was black. We knew we needed to hurry, but we had to take Bailey to the high school to pick up her car. She was freaked out to drive home, but we told her she had to, because we couldn't leave her car out in the hail. We were trying to get home as fast as we could. We pulled both cars into the garage, and literally 30 seconds later mother nature went crazy! The whole house shook, and HUGE hail started coming down.  It even freaked out the dogs! It was cool to witness it, but it caused a lot of damage all over the city Our area was one of the hardest hit. They declared the city a catastrophe, so that made dealing with the insurance a lot easier. We have to replace our whole roof, all the siding on the front and side of our house, screens, window casings, gutters, and 6 sections of our fence. We're basically going to be under construction all summer! Our camp trailer (that we haven't even used yet) got hammered! They have to replace all the front and side panels, the vents on top, and the awning. Thank heavens for insurance! The damage on the trailer was $7,700, and the house and fence was about $22,000. Another crazy thing that happened during the storm made the national news. Over 100 geese were flying, and got struck by lightening. They all fell dead out of the sky and landed in a parking lot. So sad!

This is what all of our siding looks like!

Our poor house!

Some people have pictures with hail bigger than ping pong balls!

You can't really tell from this picture, because the lighting wasn't good, but our trailer is COVERED in dents! It should be fixed in about a month.

Here's a short video of the storm. Notice the holes it's putting in our siding!

Easter!

Happy Easter! We spent the weekend watching General Conference. After Conference on Sunday, we had a yummy Easter dinner, and then watched one of the musicals that Bailey got in her basket.

Sleepy head got her Easter basket!

She got more musicals to add to her collection, and some candy.

Sawyer came home later in the day and got his basket. He got 3 shirts and lots of candy.

A yummy ham dinner!

Bailey made a cute Easter dessert!
It was awesome that Easter and General Conference fell on the same day. It helped keep our focus on the Savior, where it should be on Easter.

Sam's Wedding!

Sam got married! Bree is a lucky girl, because Sam is a great guy! Sawyer was a groomsmen at the wedding. It's so crazy that all these high school friends are getting married!

These three were best buds in high school! Sam, Dani, and Sawyer.

Sawyer, Sam, and Bree

Sawyer is grabbing Sam's butt in this one.

High school friends and their spouses. So fun!

Bailey caught the bouquet and Sawyer caught the garter.
Congratulations and good luck Sam and Bree!

Spring Break!

Bailey and I took our annual spring break trip to CA again this year. We left at 5:00 in the morning on Saturday and drove straight through. We usually drive it in two days, but we actually decided that we like doing all in one day better.
Day 1:
On Sunday we hung around the ranch all day and played with the horses. That night we did our annual family dinner at Bongiovanni's.

This is Sultan! He's new since the last time we visited. We loved him!

Nova was glad to have her buddy back! She loves to follow Bailey around.

Three generations of horse lovers!

Bailey and Joey

I love him! He's my favorite!

We brushed piles and piles of hair off Joey while we were there. We both rode him around the ranch on Sunday.

Hunter and Bailey!

Me and Craig!

We take this same picture every year!
Day 2:
Bailey and I got up early and drove to Poway Lake to hike/run Mount Woodson. We hiked the 4 miles to the top, and ran the 4 miles back down. It was a really cool hike! From the top we could see the ocean, downtown San Diego, and clear into Mexico. When we got back from our hike, we went on a trail ride.

That's Mexico and the Pacific Ocean behind her.

Potato Chip Rock

We went on a fun trail ride. Mr. Pal, Bailey, and Max getting ready to go.

Bailey loves riding Mr. Pal. He's a total spaz, and she thinks it's so fun!

Bailey and Grandma!
Day 3:
On Tuesday we got up early again to do the Cedar Creek Falls/Devil's Punchbowl hike. It's this beautiful oasis in the middle of no where. We had the whole place to ourselves for over an hour. The water was FREEZING, but crazy Bailey went in anyways! After we finished at the base of the waterfall, we hiked to the top of it. We had that area to ourselves too! Once we finished our hike, we stopped in Julian for their famous pie! Yum!

This is the canyon we hiked down to get to the waterfall.

Enjoy this little video!

Devil's Punchbowl! The pictures don't do it justice. It's the coolest place! So beautiful!

Right before we took this picture, Bailey hit her head on a tree so hard that she almost passed out. She was dizzy and had a headache for the rest of the trip. I'm thinking she may have had a concussion.

She sat on that rock for a long time building up her nerve to jump in. The water was so cold!

She finally did it! I missed the picture, so she had to jump in 4 more times until I finally got a good one! Hahaha, I thought she was gonna kill me! When she was swimming back to the rocks to climb out, she was yelling, "My muscles are clenching!" It was so cold that her muscles were locking up! I thought I was gonna have to jump in and save her. I was laughing so hard, I probably would have been no help.

The 4th times a charm, and I finally got a good picture!

This was the top of the falls. There was a little pool right behind where Bailey is standing and you could get in and look right over the waterfall.

She was so excited to finally get Julian pie!

We couldn't decide, so we got 3 pieces to share! :)
Day 4:
Beach Day! This was probably our favorite day. We went to Torrey Pines State Reserve and ran along the cliffs overlooking the ocean. We saw two pods of dolphins! After our run, we played at the beach. This area was so gorgeous! That evening, we met some of my high school friends at the Souplantation for dinner. It was so fun for Bailey to meet them, and to catch up and talk about the good old days.

Best run ever!

We were watching a pod of dolphins right by the shore from this lookout point.

She was so excited that the path took us down to the beach. The whole time we were running she would giggle and say, "There's the ocean!"

Flat Rock

This was my favorite part of the whole day! I got this great picture of Bailey jumping in the ocean. She looked at it and said she wanted me to take another one because she was making a funny face. She wanted one with a normal face. Zoom in on the next picture!

This was the try for the normal face! We were laughing sooooo hard! She couldn't try again, because jumping was hurting her head, and making her dizzy (from hitting her head the day before).

This was our last lookout point, and one of our favorites. So pretty!

Playing at the beach!

She went under. She was the only one crazy enough to be in the water. There was a lady watching her from the shore, and she cheered for Bailey when she finally went under.

This is Black's Beach-it's a nude beach. We were only on the cliff above it trying to find a sign for Bailey to take a picture with. Then we saw our second pod of dolphins! They were right by the shore, and a lady walked up the hill and told us she was swimming right by them. We wanted to go down and see them so bad, but we were more worried about the other 'stuff' we'd see. We opted to watch the dolphins from afar.

Day 5:
We started day 5 with a very hard run up Cowles Mountain. Bailey is a beast and could run almost all the way up. There is a 360 degree view from the top, but it was a cloudy day, so we didn't have very good visibility. It was rainy for a lot of the day, so we hung out in the cabin watching Harry Potter movies with my Mom. She had finished reading the series earlier in the year, so we were tying to watch a movie each night that we were there. We got them all finished up on Thursday. We also played with the horses one last time since we were leaving early the next morning.

Avalon is the neighbor's dog. She loved Bailey and followed her everywhere.

Cruisin' in the golf cart!
We had a great trip! This was her last high school spring break, so we'll have to decide if we want to keep the CA tradition, or start a new one for the college years.
