We finally had a Saturday with nothing going on, so we decided to do a 12 mile hike at Craters of the Moon. After driving an hour and a half to get there, we found out the road leading to the trail head was closed for construction. We were so bummed! Sawyer doesn't like hiking as much as the rest of us do, so he stayed home. Since we didn't do the hike, I totally wish he would have come. We toured Craters of the Moon, and had a great time in the caves and lava tubes.
Mark and Bailey at the top of Inferno Cone. This is one of the bigger cones that the lava poured out of. It was quite a steep walk to get up it. On the way back down Bailey decided to run. Once she started, she couldn't stop herself. It was dang funny to watch.
Dewdrop Cave was the first one we explored. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but we found out if goes back pretty far.
This is the other side of the cave. It went down pretty far, and was really cold inside. You couldn't see anything without a flashlight.
We went through a lava tube called Indian Tunnel. The tunnels formed from lava flowing through, and the outside layer cooling and hardening first. The rest of the lava eventually flows out of it, and you are left with huge tubes. We walked in one side of this one, and came out the other. It was pretty cool.
This is the hole we climbed out to get out of Indian Tunnel. I think she looks like a prairie dog :)!
We also went to Boy Scout Cave, but that one is a little scary, so we didn't go very far into it. We thought we were just going to be hiking, so we were in shorts, and didn't have very good flashlights with us. In Boy Scout Cave, you actually have to get on your belly and slither through a lot of it. It's cold and pitch black....uh, no thanks! The last one we went to was Beauty Cave. That one was big and dark. Very cool though!
