Craters of the Moon

Mark and I spent a Saturday at Craters of the Moon. We did a lot of trail running, hiking, and exploring. We pretty much did everything there is to do. We covered over 20 miles and did every hike they have. It really is a fascinating place!
We started out looking at the North Crater flow, and then did a cool trail that takes you through the vent of the North Crater, past a couple other big craters, and to some splatter cones. This was probably my favorite trail in the park.

Hiking to the North Crater.

You can see how cool this trail is. So different than what we normally hike.

The North Crater.

Love the Idaho Sky! It looked awesome all day long!

Next we took a series of short walks through Devil's Orchard, up the Inferno Cone, and saw the Splatter Cones.

Next we took a trail to see the imprints of some lava charred trees.

Tree molds.
Our longest hike was the Broken Loop Trail, and the Wilderness Trail. It ended up being 10 miles which I wasn't expecting. This took us to Buffalo Cave, some upright lave tree molds, and out to Echo Crater.

Buffalo Cave

It's crazy, because you have to duck down to get into the caves, but once you're inside, they open up to this huge area that you can stand and walk around in. You would never know that from the entrances and exits.

This is how we got out of Buffalo Cave.

Upright tree molds.

The clouds were awesome all day!
Our last section was the fun part. We did the caves, which are really lava tubes.

The landscape is crazy!

Inside Dewdrop Cave.

Indian Tunnel is my favorite one. It's a huge lava tube!

This is the little hole that led us out of Indian Tunnel.

Entering Beauty Cave.

Beauty Cave was dark and very cold!

Fun day of exploring for us!
